World’s Longest Accelerator Probes Universe’s Tiniest Particles
Actually, a very interesting article about the Stanford Linear Accelerator.
The various experiments at SLAC generate roughly 2 terabytes of data every day. That adds up quickly. The data center currently contains about 2.5 petabytes (or 2,500 terabytes) of data in an array of StorageTek Nearline tape robots, including Johnny 5 (top). When data is requested from a robot, it springs to life, grabs the appropriate tape and dumps the data to the ¾-petabyte disk pool.
We told Johnny 5 we had a tape to read. It got all excited (bottom) and raced its tape caddy, with an infrared-LED-encrusted camera, up to the access door. We lied. There was no tape for Johnny.
